Japanese architect to win “Mother Teresa award”

Architect Shigeru Ban has become the first Japanese to receive the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice. The award is given by the Harmony Foundation in India to honour individuals and groups promoting peace, harmony and social justice.

Sixty-year-old Shigeru Ban has been active in designing and building low-cost temporary homes in disaster prone areas worldwide. Shigeru Ban introduced partitions made of paper and cloth that provide privacy in shelters for evacuees. His structures housed evacuees after earthquakes that hit the Kumamoto Prefecture last year.
The award ceremony will be held in Mumbai on the 10th of next month. The foundation says Shigeru Ban has made the world a better place through the power of architecture.
