Anti-doping chiefs will investigate claims a Kenyan athletics official offered to give athletes prior warning of drugs tests in return for 10,000 Euro. The Sunday Times and German broadcaster ARD secretly filmed Major Michael Rotich apparently making the offer.

United States has claimed the first gold medal of Rio 2016 as Virginia Thrasher triumphed in the women's 10-meter air rifle event yesterday. The 19-year-old had flown under the radar ahead of the Games but showed impressive accuracy to claim the title by one point with an Olympic Record.

The Olympic games gets underway.

The 2016 Olympic Games officially got underway in Rio with the opening ceremony at the Maracana Stadium.
Athletes from 206 nations and a refugee team are in Brazil to compete in 28 sports and be watched by a global audience of billions.

Rangana Herath became the oldest bowler to take a Test hat-trick.


Rangana Herath became the oldest bowler to take a Test hat-trick as Australia were dismissed for 106 in the second Test in Galle. The left-arm spinner, who is 38 years and 139 days old, is the second Sri Lankan to take a Test hat-trick. Adam Voges, Peter Nevill and Mitchell Starc - after a third-umpire review - fell to Herath in the 25th over. Herath finished with figures of 4-35 as Australia were bowled out for their lowest Test score against Sri Lanka.

Olympic Games gets underway tonight in Rio, Brazil.

The Olympic Games gets underway tonight with a spectacular opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium in Rio, Brazil. About 11,000 sportsmen and women from 206 countries will take part in this festival. The opening ceremony will be held at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Nine sportsmen and women from Sri Lanka will take part in this ceremony.

Carrying Sri Lanka’s lion flag at the opening ceremony will be veteran marathon runner Anuradha Indrajith Cooray. The long distance runner will be competing in his third Olympic Games, having done so in Athens 2004 and London 2012 Games.
