Rio Olympics end with Maracana carnival.

The Rio Olympics has ended with a spectacular carnival-inspired closing ceremony, and the official handover to 2020 hosts Tokyo. The colourful ceremony, lasting almost three hours, celebrated Brazil's arts and was held in a wet Maracana. Among the highlights were Tokyo's impressive showcase and a vibrant carnival parade.

The Prime Minister meets the members of the Asian Cricket council.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe states that Chinese government is ready to introduce cricket to their people. The Chinese Authorities had told the Premier about their willingness. He was speaking at a meeting with members of the Asian Cricket council at Temple Trees this afternoon.

Great Britain's Mo Farah won his fourth Olympic gold.

South Korea's Inbee Park won the women's Olympic golf tournament in Rio. Park shot a final-round 66 to finish on 16 under, five clear of world number one Lydia Ko of New Zealand. China's Shanshan Feng took bronze, a shot further back on 10 under par.

Unstoppable Bolt wins 200 meters and eyes 'treble treble'.


Usain Bolt won the men's 200 meters to claim his second Rio 2016 gold, his eighth at an Olympics, and keep alive his hopes of an unprecedented 'treble treble'. The Jamaican ran 19.78 seconds to come home ahead of Canada's Andre de Grasse and France's Christophe Lemaitre. Bolt has already won the 100 meters in Rio and will run in the 4x100 meters relay final today.

US swimmers were not robbed, says Rio police chief.

Four US Olympic gold medal swimmers who said they had been robbed in Rio de Janeiro were not victims of crime, the head of the city's civil police says. Fernando Veloso told reporters that one or more of the men had instead vandalised part of a petrol station and then offered to pay for the damage.

Chinese diver Ren Qian won Olympic gold at the age of 15 as Britain's Tonia Couch finished out of the medals in the 10m platform competition. Ren took the lead after the third of five dives and a superb inward three-and-a-half somersault with her fourth virtually clinched the title.

Japanese wrestler Kaori Icho has become the first woman to win individual gold medals at four consecutive Olympics. The 32-year-old beat Russia's Valeria Koblova to win the -58kg freestyle wrestling division in Rio - as she has in every Games since Athens 2004.

Female wrestler Sakshi Malik gives first Rio Olympic medal to India.

Female wrestler Sakshi Malik has delivered India its first medal of the 2016 Rio Games, sending a nation into ecstasy. After a gritty performance at the 58 kilogram women's wrestling category, she won bronze, becoming the first Indian female wrestler and the fourth Indian woman to win an Olympic medal.

Malik was born in India's Haryana state, where women were for some time not allowed to take part in wrestling events. The 23-year-old started training young, having gained support from her parents to pursue the sport.

Media reports say locals initially berated her parents, telling them that their daughter would become undesirable to potential suitors. But she went on to earn a silver medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and walked away with the bronze at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.
Malik comes from the district of Rohtak, which gained notoriety in 2014, after two sisters fought back against a group of men who accosted them on a public bus.

Meanwhile, Jamaica's Elaine Thompson has won Olympic gold in the 200 meters to complete a sprint double in Rio. Thompson who is 24, clocked 21.78 seconds to beat Netherlands' world champion Dafne Schippers by 0.13 seconds and add the 200 meter title to the gold she won in the 100 meters.

SL sets a target of 324 runs for Aussies.

Sri Lanka have declared their 2nd innings at 347 for the loss of 8 wickets setting a target of 324 runs for victory to Australia on the final day of the 3rd and final Test played at the SSC. Australians  reached 77 for the loss of one wicket at lunch They require another 247 runs for victory.
