Philippe Coutinho: Liverpool reject Barcelona's £90m bid for Brazil star

Liverpool have rejected a bid of 100 million euros from Barcelona for Brazil playmaker Philippe Coutinho. Barca's second bid for the 25-year-old, which was rejected immediately, comprised an initial 85 million euros plus 15 million euros in add-ons. Liverpool have reiterated that Coutinho - who joined them from Inter Milan for 8.5 million euros in 2013 - is not for sale. Barcelona sold Brazil forward Neymar to Paris St-Germain for a world record transfer of 200 million euros last week.(BBC)

Axar to replace Ravindra Jadeja for 3rd Test vs SL

India have brought in left-arm spin-bowling allrounder Axar Patel for the Pallekele Test, as a replacement for the suspended Ravindra Jadeja. He will be the third spinner in the squad behind offspinner R Ashwin and left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav.

Manchester United were outclassed as Spanish and European champions Real Madrid retained the Uefa Super Cup with victory in a sweltering Skopje. Madrid dominated from the start and led when Casemiro - who earlier hit the bar - slid in a half volley. They doubled their lead when Isco calmly slotted in from eight yards after a neat one-two with Gareth Bale, who started ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo. New 75 million Euro striker Romelu Lukaku tapped in before Marcus Rashford scuffed wide.

Lahiru Thirimanne recalled to the squad for the second Test against India

Batsman Lahiru Thirimanne has been recalled to the squad for the second Test against India, 13 months after he last played for Sri Lanka. Left-arm wristspinner Lakshan Sandakan has also been added. While Thirimanne is effectively a replacement for the injured Asela Gunaratne, Sandakan's inclusion is a sign Sri Lanka are considering a stronger spin-bowling attack for the SSC Test that begins tomorrow.  The match will also see the return of captain Dinesh Chandimal, who had missed the first game due to pneumonia.

Tillakaratne appointed Sri Lanka's temporary batting coach.


Hashan Tillakaratne has joined the Sri Lanka team as temporary batting coach, and will be with the side until at least the end of the Test series against India. Sri Lanka have been without a permanent batting coach since Marvan Atapattu was raised to the position of head coach in 2014. Tillakaratne has been a coach in the SLC system since December last year, largely working with the sides that feed into the national team. He had also previously served as a national selector, between January 2013 and April 2015.

The sport minister requests the public to support the national cricket team during the India's tour in Sri Lanka.

Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera  stresses that he will never safeguard offenders. It is the responsibility of the players to play their role loyally to the country without intervening into external or political matters.  At the cabinet press briefing the minister said that, all parties should support the Sri Lanka national cricket team to face the visiting Indian Cricket Team with strong morals. He has a right to expressed views for the wellbeing of the sport as the minister of sports.

Sri Lanka won the test match against Zimbabwe by 4 wickets.

Sri Lanka went through some anxious moments to overcome the challenge put forward by Zimbabwe and finally beat Zimbabwe by 4 wickets. Sri Lanka had gone through a lean period recently as a part of transition period which is in progress. Although sri lanka lost the ODI series by a narrow margin to Zimbabwe, it needed Sri Lanka to make a huge chase in the 4th innings as a new Asian record and world's 5th highest chase to beat Zimbabwe by 4 wickets here at R Premadasa stadium today.

Sri Lanka need a further 218 runs on the final day to win the one off test match against Zimbabwe. here at R Premadasa stadium. Today is the final day of the test match. Sri Lanka were 170 for 3 at the end of the 4th day's play before Zimbabwe were bowled out for 377 in their second innings earlier on the day.

 At the crease is a sparkling Kusal Mendis, who has hit 60 off 85 balls so far, and has refused to let the spinners settle to him, on what has now become a slightly treacherous pitch. Alongside him stands Angelo Mathews, one of Sri Lanka's best-ever fourth-innings batsmen.

With an inexperienced Niroshan Dickwella, and an injured Asela Gunaratne to come, this, you suspect, is the partnership that will have to bloom if Sri Lanka are to score the further 218 required for victory. They have so far managed 170 for 3. The game stands tantalizingly poised.

Sri Lanka won the The 3rd ODI against Zimbabwe played at Hambanthota by eight wickets. Zimbabwe batted first and scored 310 runs for eight wickets. Sri Lanaka passed victory target in 47.2 overs for the loss of two wickets. The opening pair Dhanuska Gunathilaka and Niroshan Dickwella both made their maiden ODI centuries.
