Laura Trott has become the first British woman to win four Olympic gold medals by defending her omnium title. The world champion, 24, moves ahead of Charlotte Dujardin, who won her third Olympic gold with victory in the individual dressage. She scored 230 points to win the title by 24 from American Sarah Hammer.


Silva century gives Sri Lanka 288-run lead.

The most decorated Olympian of all time then helped the US win the men's 4x200 meter freestyle relay by a wide margin. Phelps has won more than twice as many Olympic gold medals as the athlete second on the list, former Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina whose medal tally stands at nine.
Meanwhile, a bus carrying journalists between Olympic venues in Rio de Janeiro has had two windows smashed, after stones were thrown at it last evening. There was initial alarm when it was thought the damage was caused by gunfire. A few of the dozen people on board suffered minor cuts. The bus was travelling between a hockey venue and the main press centre.
Meanwhile, confusion abounded at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre as the normally azure pool water turned a swampy green for the women's synchronized 10 meter platform final. Divers were forced to compete in water the colour sea lions, rather than Olympians are accustomed to performing in. Inside the press room, journalists chatted about the possibility of the water having not been treated properly overnight, causing a drop in chlorine levels and the formation of algae.
