The President says, keen attention will be focused on the quality and standards of education, maintained at private education institutes

Speaking at a meeting with SAITM students and their parents today, President Maithripala Sirisena said, his dedicated mediation in resolving the SAITM issue was not seen on the part of any previous Head of State for an issue of this nature. He added, he intervened as he wished to ensure that no student be faced with injustice when receiving education in Sri Lanka. Many political actors were overshadowing the issue to obtain political advantages. However, the government was able to put forward solutions, bearing in mind the future of the country's children. The President pointed out, if he had not considered the future of the students who were studying at SAITM, he could have ordered the closure of the institute in 2015. Nevertheless amidst allegations, insults and protests, after having discussions with all relevant stakeholders for over 3 years, efforts were made to provide an appropriate solution to the issue, bearing in mind the future of these children.

The government is instrumental in strengthening Free Education by providing the necessary physical and human resources for government schools and universities.

The President noted, in the same way, the government has also accepted the policy to equip non-governmental education institutes as well. He added, keen attention will be focused on the quality and standards of education, maintained at private education institutes.
