A Presidential Awards Ceremony has been planned for journalists

For the first time a Presidential Awards Ceremony has been planned for journalists. It will be held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena this December. Award winners will be selected by 4 impartial jury councils, while 54 awards will be on offer. Speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo today Minister of Media: Mangala Samaraweera said, the objective of this award ceremony is to appraise competent and creative journalists, in order to build an outstanding Culture of Journalism.

Meanwhile, responding to a question raised by a journalist concerning the New York Times, the Minister said, that newspaper has taken full responsibility for the article it published. The New York Times has advised anyone who needs further information to contact their senior editors. The Minister pointed out, if Mahinda Rajapakse is not guilty of the points raised in the said article, he can directly take action against the newspaper, instead of seeking 'character certificates' from China.
