A ceremony to provide monthly allowances to artists was held yesterday at the National Film Corporation under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena. A monthly allowance of 5,000 rupees will be provided to senior artists who have contributed to the betterment of the Sri Lankan Cinema. This program was initiated in 1987 with an allowance of 500 rupees. Later the amount was increased to 2,000 rupees and 57 artists received it. This allowance was not given to any new artist from the year 1998. However, President Maithripala Sirisena instructed the officials to increase the amount into 5,000 rupees, and to increase the number of Artists who will benefit from this move. Currently this allowance is paid to 163 artists. 20 artists ceremonially received the cheques from the President at the ceremony yesterday. Ministers Wijayadasa Rajapaksa, Ranjith Madduma Bandara and many senior artists were attended.
