The government will implement a programme to protect onion and potatoes cultivators

The government will prepare a programme to protect onion and potato cultivators. A committee headed by state minister Wasantha Aluvihare has been appointed for the preparation of this programme.    Onion is cultivated widely in the districts of Matale, Jaffna, Puttalam while potato is a popular crop in Bandarawela and Nuwara Eliya districts.  Normally,  cultivators face a problem of selling their produce at a reasonable price.  Minister Mahinda Amaraweera says that to ensure a reasonable price for cultivators there is a  need of introducing a method to prevent certain businessmen exploiting the farmers.  He also says that action will be taken to impose, if necessary, a ban on the import of potatoes and onions during the local harvesting period.  A committee will look into all these aspects and prepare a formal programme to help the farmers to continue their cultivation.  The ministry will purchase 70 thousand metric tons of onions as seeds.
