Sri Lanka celebrates the Sinhala and Tamil New Year jubilantly.

With the Sun, crossing over from the House of Pisces to the House of Aries in the celestial sphere, The Sinhala and Tamil New Year dawned at 8.13 this morning. Preparing meals for the New Year took place at 10.40am. The partaking of meals and engaging in transactions was set for 11.53am.

President Maithripala Sirisena, in his New Year message said, The Sinhala and Tamil New Year showcases the traditional riches we possess. By deeply studying this glorious cultural event, which harvests progressive values and ethics to the whole society, and by celebrating it, we can surely collect a 'bountiful harvest' of 'peace and prosperity'.
Sharing such great values with everybody, the President wished all Sri Lankans here and abroad, a peaceful and prosperous Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickrmasinghe issuing a New Year message said, 'the dawn of spring' brings the 'flourish of nature' and nourishes the human spirit, as we meditate on the ideas of co-operation, forgiveness and empathy for all life. The Sinhala and Tamil New Year is the foremost national festivity celebrated across the country in the splendour of spring. The Premier pointed out, it provides the ideal setting to deepen our relationship with each other, and share our rich cultural heritage.

The SLBC aired the programme: 'Rata Wataa Avurudu' from 8.00am to 12.30pm over Sinhala National Service and all Regional Services, today. Bank of Ceylon sponsored this programme for the 28th consecutive year.
