Accepting applications for the proposed interest-free Student Loan Scheme for the year 2018, ends on Tuesday. Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Higher Education, Jayanthi Wijethunga said, the date was extended to the 20th of March, which is next Tuesday.

This loan scheme has been launched targeting students who passed their 2016 GCE A/Level examination and are interested in pursuing their degrees at non-state higher education institutes. Under this scheme, a sum of 800,000 rupees can be obtained from State Banks. Re-payments begin after a grace period of 5 years. The students can begin re-paying their loans once they graduate and commence employment.

Mrs. Wijethunga stated that the objective is to reach 5000 students under this loan scheme. She added, however, students who have been selected to State Universities or foreign universities cannot apply under this scheme.
