The construction of the upper Alahera canal that will carry water to the northern province is now underway.

State minister of Mahaweli development Mahinda Amaraweera says that the construction of the upper Alahera canal is now underway. This canal will be constructed to carry water from Moragahakanda reservoir to the northern province.   The 65 kilometers long canal will be connected to Maha Kanadarawa irrigational tank and then the water passes to Iranamadu tank via Padaviya tank. This canal project includes the longest underground tunnel in Sri Lanka.  The Asian development Bank has granted 65 billion rupees for this project.  This project will provide water to cultivate  over 30 thousand acres of lands.
