Voting for the local government polls to take place from 7.00 am to 4.00 pm.

Voting for the local government polls will take place from 7.00 am to 4.00 pm today. 8,325 councillors will be selected to 340 local government bodies at this poll. The voting will commence at 13,374 polling centers. Over 15.76 million voters are eligible to cast their vote. Chairman of the election commission Mahinda Deshapriya says that the official poll card is not compulsory for voting, if voters have their names in the electoral register.
However, it is compulsory to have a valid identification document to cast the votes. since there is no preferential voting at this election, voters need to only place a 'cross', in the corresponding box, opposite the political party or independent group of choice. No other markings should be made on the ballot paper.
The election commission has emphasised that the use of mobile phones, taking photographs, videos, possessing of arms, smoking and the use of alcohol is completely prohibited at the premises of polling centers.
Meanwhile, over 66 thousand police officers have been deployed in view of the election. Police mobile services have also been deployed covering all polling centers. The police media spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara says conducting any sort of election propaganda activity during this period is totally prohibited.
