All preparations have been made for the much awaited Local Government Elections.

All preparations have been made to conduct the much awaited local government elections tomorrow. Ballot boxes and ballot papers will be dispatched with election officials to all polling stations this morning. Voting begins at 7.00 am tomorrow.
Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya, explaining on the method of voting stated that since there is no preferential voting at this election, voters need to only place a 'cross', in the corresponding box, opposite the political party or independent group of choice.
He further stated that it is compulsory for all public officials and employees deployed on election duties to report for their respective duties without fail. Information has surfaced that certain officials scheduled to be deployed on Elections Duty are attempting to keep away from their duties, giving unjustifiable excuses. It has also surfaced that there are attempts to refuse releasing vehicles necessary for the conduct of the election. Mr. Deshapriya points out that in the constitution itself it is stated that all public officials are under obligation to function upon the directive issued by the Elections Commission in order to conduct an election effectively. Those violating this obligation can face a fine of 100,000 rupees or a three year prison sentence or both. He expressed his confidence that all public officials including school principals and teachers will provide their fullest support to make the Local Government Polls a success.
