The Presidents Media Division says that the President has sought the opinion of the Supreme Court regarding the term of his office, in order to douse misinterpretation.

President Maithripala Sirisena sought the opinion of the Supreme Court, regarding his term of office. After the enactment of the 19th amendment to the Constitution, there have been two interpretations regarding the term of office of the present president.
In order to dispel this confusion, the President has sought the opinion of the Supreme Court regarding the actual term of office.
The President’s Media Division issuing a special announcement stated that according to the powers vested in the President under the Constitution, the President has the right to seek the opinion of the Supreme Court. Former Presidents who held office had also sought the opinion of the Supreme Court during their tenures. This is a significant feature in the constitutions of democratic governance.
