The Moragahakanda Reservoir Project was vested with the public by President Maithripala Sirisena

The Moragahakanda Reservoir Project was vested with the public by President Maithripala Sirisena this morning. The president and the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka released the maiden flow of water to the paddy lands at the auspicious time. The Chinese ambassador handed over the scroll, to the president officially offering the project to the Sri Lankan government.


Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe and top ministers and officials and the public were also present at this occasion. The president also inaugurated the hydro power plant at the premises which will add 25 mega watts to the national grid. The president and the prime minister also observed the main operational unit of the reservoir.
This is the last mega reservoir constructed using the Mahaweli water. 1.5 million people will benefit from this project. Around 4.3 million acres of cultivation land will receive irrigation facilities through this project. 300 thousand people will receive pure drinking water facilities. The total volume of the reservoir is 660 thousand acre feet.

A special ceremony to commemorate 40 years completion of Mahaweli project will all so be held Polgolla at 3.00 pm this evening under the patronage of the President and the Prime Minister.
