The European Union launches one of the largest programmes of development support to reduce poverty in the Uva and Central Provinces

The European Union has launched one of the largest programmes of development support in the country. It will contribute 5.4 billion rupees to reduce poverty in the Uva and Central Provinces by improving the income level of poor families living in rural areas. Attention is being focused upon eradicating food scarcity even in the midst of hardships. Speaking at the launch with the participation of the Governors, Chief Ministers and Chief Secretaries of the Uva and Central Provinces, The Ambassador of the Delegation of the European Union to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Tung-Lai Margue said that this programme has been designed bearing the needs of the poorest in mind. He further stated that from clean water and sanitation to increasing technical knowledge and empowering women, people in these rural areas should see a marked improvement in their lives.
This grant, which is a part of the EU's wider programme of support to rural development in Sri Lanka, will benefit rural communities in the Monaragala, Badulla, Nuwara Eliya and Matale Districts. The programme is expected to be operational for five years from 2017 to 2022.
