The amended bill with relevant regulations for the upcoming Local Government Elections, will be handed over to the Election Commission tomorrow.

The amended bill which includes the relevant regulations for the upcoming Local Government Elections, will be handed over to the Election Commission tomorrow. Minister Faizer Mustapha will hand the bill over to the election commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya, in order to obtain proposals and recommendations from members of the election commission. Thereafter, the it will be published in the gazette. Secretary to the ministry of Provincial Councils and local governments Kamal Padmasiri says that once this task is complete the Elections Commissioner will be able to declare the date for the elections and call for nominations.

Meanwhile, speaking to the SLBC, additional elections commissioner M M Mohammed said that the commission has already taken preliminary measures to conduct the election. Awareness programmes to educate political parties have already commenced. There are about 70 registered political parties that are eligible to contest the election. He added that the 2017 voters register was certified today and it will be valid with immediate effect.
