Prohibition of the Polythene is effective from the 1st of September.

The Central Environmental Authority says, that polythene food wrappers, polythene bags and expanded polystyrene products, will be banned with effect from the 1st of September. Legal action will be taken against those who utilize these polythene materials against environmental protection. The director of the management unit of the central environmental authority Ajith Weerasundera said that, these low breaches can be find of 10,000 rupees or two year imprisonment can be imposed of.  It is prohibited to burn polythene in open air. It is revealed  that nearly two million polythene wrappers are used daily in the island. In addition to that central environmental authority says, that 1.5 million polythene bags  also being used.
