New Electronic national identity card will be introduced in October.


The Commissioner General of Registration of Persons Viyani Gunathilaka says that the proposed electronic national identity card will be introduced during the next October. The programme will be implemented in two stages. The first stage is activated in October and the people who want to have new identity card in electronic means can have it by October. He indicated that the persons who misplaced their present identity card and those who want to have it amended and persons completed the required age can have the new electronic identity card.

During the 2nd stage the electronic ID card will be issued to all the citizens. For that purpose, 16 million lists of names will be obtained. These lists consist of Bio data, finger prints, and an internationally recognized photograph. The Cabinet of Ministers have approved the issuance of the new Electronic Identity Card and on 22nd it will be produced before the Parliament.
