An allowance of 10,000 rupees will be provided to every farming family inconvenienced by the severely dry weather condition. President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the relevant officials to take necessary measures in this regard. The head of state has issued directives to provide the allowance from the end of next month to the commencement of the Yala season, subsequent to obtaining comprehensive details on farming families inconvenienced. A committee comprising of divisional secretaries, Grama Niladari officers as well as Samurdhi officers will be appointed for the purpose.
The President issued the relevant directives during a discussion held yesterday with the heads of the relevant units on the impact of drought, on the agrarian sector.
Then meeting was held at the official residence of the President yesterday. He added officials failing to fulfill their responsibilities pertaining to land filling incidents should resign. A rice concession will also be provided to people suffering from the drought.
In addition, the head of state has directed the officials to explore the possibility of utilizing buses to transport people to water sources. He also instructed, emergency electricity generators be fitted in Pallekele, Hambantota, Kurunegala as well as Galle to address the looming electricity crisis.
