The release of the maiden waters of the Moragahakanda Reservoir is slated to take place on the 11th of this month. Deputy Minister Anuradha Jayarathne said that more than 94,000 hectares of land will be ploughed under the multipurpose project. The Moragahakanda Reservoir spans 29 square kilometers. The total cost of the project is estimated at 1150 million US Dollars.
The construction of the dams of the reservoir has entered the final phase. The release of the initial waters of the Moragahakanda Reservoir is scheduled to take place under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena. The deputy minister pointed out that 3,700 families who had been displaced due to the project had been given compensation and land blocks.
1.2 million rupee compensation will be given to the extended families as well under the directives of President Sirisena.Arrangements have been made to launch work on the construction of the Elahera Project alias the Rajarata Ela network on the same day.
The Moragahakanda Reservoir will fulfill the water requirements of the people of the Northern, North Central and Eastern Provinces. The intention of the Government is to grant relief to the people of these Provinces that are infected with the kidney disease. The distance of the Rajarata Ela network is 103 meters. It will provide water to around 1500 small tanks in the Dry Zone.
