The United Nations World Food Programme is providing assistance to the people affected by recent floods.


The United Nations World Food Programme is providing cash assistance to more than 40,000 people affected by recent floods in the hardest-hit districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Kegalle and Ratnapura. The cash will come in the form of a top-up of the Government of Sri Lanka’s Samurdhi social safety net scheme, which aims to help poor families meet their food and nutrition needs.

The government grants aid for several families affected by the Salawa bomb explosion.

Divisional secretary of Seethawaka M.M.S.K. Bandara says the ministry of disaster management has allocated money to provide 50 thousand rupees each for 41 families who were affected by the Kosgama Salawa explosion to construct temporary houses.

Accelerated inquiries into the missing of three billion rupees of the EPF of the Ceylon Electricity Board.

Minister of Power and Energy has instructed the relevant officials to accelerate inquiries into the missing of three billion rupees of the Employees Provident Fund of the Ceylon Electricity Board. A complaint was filed with the Criminal Investigations Department in this regard by the Minister. The complaint notes that the funds had been invested in treasury bills in 2009 and adds that, however, what happened to the funds remains a mystery. At a discussion held with the representatives of the all trade unions of the Board yesterday, the Minister pledged that stern action will be taken against the culprits disregarding their political powers.
