Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture Vijitha Chandra Piyathilleka says releasing of money under the fertilizer subsidy programme to the farmers for the cultivation activities of Maha Season will conclude today. Money had been deposited in bank accounts of farmers of 18 districts by yesterday. Releasing of money for other districts will take place today. The government has released a sum of more than six billion rupees for the Maha season. The number of farmers benefited from the programme exceeds 815 thousand. Cultivation activities will be carried out in 545 thousand hectares of paddy lands. The money will be deposited in the bank accounts that are in the banks of BOC, People’s Bank, The National Savings Bank and the Rural Development Bank.
Meanwhile Director General of Irrigation Saman Weerasinghe says the water will be issued for crops till the 15th of next month under the prevailing condition. As a whole water levels of main reservoirs have dropped to 30 to 32 percent. Water for cultivation in Maha season is to be issued from 50 tanks. Rains are expected in the months of April and May next year. Therefore the director general urges the farmers to use the water sparingly.
