Sunil Ratnayake completes 30 years in Sri Lanka’s tele-drama industry. The only tele drama to win the most number of tele-drama awards, “Dandubasnamanaya”, was produced by him. Speaking of his humble beginnings and the 30-year journey Ratnayake reveals that his interest in video only began as a hobby while working as a civil engineer at the Highways Department. It was during this time that a documentary he had created on the Badulla district titled “Badulu Siriya” had caught the attention of the then Prime Minster Ranasinghe Premadasa who got him hired as a videographer, which later lead to his first tele-dramas “Ran Doratu” and the more popular “Bhagya”.
He received the coveted Prime Minister’s award for “Apey Gamata Kiri Uthurai” and the Environmental Day Award for the documentary film “Gasakin Kandulak”. He was the pioneer to introduce Digital 3D Animation in Sri Lanka. “Bhavathra”, Sri Lanka’s first ever science fiction TV series to use 3D character animation, was produced by him.
