Minister Wijedasa Rajapaksa says the the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation has been able to enhance the aesthetic tastes of the people

 

State Music Awards - 2018 was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at the Nelum Pokuna theatre, yesterday. Veteran Vocalist and Music Director, Dr. Dayarathne Ranathunga was awarded with the lifetime achievement award from President Maithripala Sirisena at this ceremony. In addition Dumal J. Warnakulasuriya won the best singer's award in Sinhala medium. Wijekumar Niroshan is the best singer in Tamil medium. W. Priyangani was the best female singer in Sinhala medium.

Joining this event Minister Wijedasa Rajapaksa said that the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation has rendered a great service to enhance the aesthetic tastes of the people. However, the higher taste that has been developed by the SLBC among the listeners is now in a threat of deterioration due to the activities of some FM radio channels. The Minister pointed out the need to correct this fault. He added that the government will be committed to promote quality indigenous music style in the island.

Hundreds more are settling in for a night on the streets of Windsor to secure the best viewing spot. The State Dancing Awarding Ceremony will be held in the Lotus Pond Theater today.

The State Dancing Awarding Ceremony will be held in the Lotus Pond Theater at 2.00 pm this evening under the patronage of the President. Assistant Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs told the SLBC that the main objective of this ceremony is to evaluate the local dancing artists and their creations. Awards will be presented to the artists in district and the national level.

The Oktave Choir and Friends to perform Parts 2 and 3 of Handel’s Messiah

George Frideric Handel was a German composer born in 1685. Handel’s Messiah is a monumental work telling the story of Christ, from the Old Testament to his death and resurrection. Scored for Choirs, Soloists and Orchestra, the work takes about 2 ½ hours to perform and is in three parts.

The John De Silva memorial theatre is to be modernized

 

President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed relevant officials to modernize John De Silva memorial theatre in Colombo to suit present day requirements. This theatre offers facilities for performing arts events at affordable rates. The President has refuted recent media reports that John De Silva memorial theatre would be sold to the private sector, and said the theatre would remain with the artistes.

The Dambana Radio celebrates its 8th anniversary today.

The Dambana Radio celebrates its 8th anniversary today. Dambana Radio has been identified as the pioneer radio for weddha community in the Asian region. The controller of Dambana Radio Arunasiri Jayawikrema expressed his views about the community services rendered by the Dambana Radio to the nation. The radio was initially inaugurated on the 20th of February 2010 as a regional service. The Dambana Radio has conducted many programs to educate the community on environment protection.

The state drama festival will be held on the 27th of next month

 

The state drama festival will be held at the Lotus Pond Theatre in Colombo on the 27th of next month. This has been organized for the 46th time this year.   The dramas that have been selected for the final rounds are now being played until the 26th of next month at the Tower Hall in Colombo.

'The Sound of Music' to come alive at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre

Cinnamon Life in partnership with Broadway Asia International, introduces Broadway Theatre to Sri Lanka, with the Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Ian production of 'The Sound of Music'. The show will be staged at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre. The Sound of Music is one of the most acclaimed productions in the history of musical theatre. Significanly, as Colombo hosts this event, twelve children from our own country will have an opportunity to perform alongside the cast.
The Sound of Music will be the inaugural production in an ongoing partnership between Cinnamon Life and Broadway Asia International. The theatre shows will come alive from 7.30pm to 10.00 pm from the 14th to the 18th of February 2018.

SLBC and Rupavahini organize “Christmas Fest”

The City FM service of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation organized a special Musical Program in view of the upcoming Christmas season. The program which was titled “CITY FM MERRY CHRISTMAS” was held at SLBC’s Studio-6, today. Many popular vocalists performed Christmas Carols at this event. The “CITY FM MERRY CHRISTMAS” program will be aired over City FM on Christmas Eve from 10.00pm to 12.00 midnight. A repeat broadcast of this program can be listened to on Christmas day from 1.30pm to 3.00pm.

Meanwhile, a Christmas Zone titled “Christmas Fest” has been organized in the Arcade premises by the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and Rupavahini. The show will also include German singing and dancing, Recreational Sports, Christmas Carols and Dinner from a Five Star Hotel. It has been organized jointly with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau. The Christmas Zone will be open to the public on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of December from 6.00pm to 12.00 midnight.

Christiana Peiris emerged among the first 16 beauty queens at the Miss Universe pageant that was held at Las Vegas in the US. However, it was Demi-Leigh from South Africa who won the crown. It was the first time a Sri Lankan emerged among the first few rungs since 1955. Christiana was quoted saying that she would donate half of her earnings from this pageant to help cancer patients.

The 7th SAARC film festival next week

Colombo, November 15, 2017: The seventh annual SAARC film festival will be held next week. The festival will begin next Tuesday and continue until the 25th of this month.

Organized by the Saarc Cultural Center of Sri Lanka, this year’s event also showcase films from all member countries, namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Films nominated by member countries in three categories will be screened in National Film Corporation Cinema Hall situated at Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 07. Those include feature film, short film and master film. Entrance is free to the festival, and viewers will be admitted on first come first served basis.

At press briefing held today at Colombo, consultant to the festival Dhanushka Gunatilake said that the event also include a master class session on the 24th of this month at the Russian Cultural Center. This session allows film personnel, students and enthusiasts to interact with international experts.

Speaking on the occasion, chairman of the National Film Corporation Sitendra Senaratne said, they are proud to host cinematic excellence of, as much as, eight countries for five day festival. Mr.Setendra expressed his happiness to see a film from Maldives for the first time in a festival like this.

The tax upon imported and dubbed tele dramas, films and commercial programmes will be increased with immediate effect. It has been observed that certain programmes include content that is contrary to local traditions. Experts in the field have requested the Ministry Of Finance And Media to take necessary steps to alleviate the damage caused to the local industry by the import of such material. Thereby, three gazette notifications containing charges for such imported programmes, have been cancelled. A new gazette will be released detailing charges that will come into effect from midnight today. According to the new charges, the present fee of 90 thousand rupees  which is charged  for a programme dubbed in Sinhala or Tamil which has  a duration of 30 minutes and spreads over not more than 4 series, will be increased to 150 thousand rupees. However, if the programmes are telecast in the original form, without being dubbed, the tax will not be applicable.

Sunil Ratnayake completes 30 years in Sri Lanka’s tele-drama industry. The only tele drama to win the most number of tele-drama awards, “Dandubasnamanaya”, was produced by him. Speaking of his humble beginnings and the 30-year journey Ratnayake reveals that his interest in video only began as a hobby while working as a civil engineer at the Highways Department. It was during this time that a documentary he had created on the Badulla district titled “Badulu Siriya” had caught the attention of the then Prime Minster Ranasinghe Premadasa who got him hired as a videographer, which later lead to his first tele-dramas “Ran Doratu” and the more popular “Bhagya”.
He received the coveted Prime Minister’s award for “Apey Gamata Kiri Uthurai” and the Environmental Day Award for the documentary film “Gasakin Kandulak”. He was the pioneer to introduce Digital 3D Animation in Sri Lanka. “Bhavathra”, Sri Lanka’s first ever science fiction TV series to use 3D character animation, was produced by him.

The 4th Asia Pacific Choir Games in Colombo

Colombo hosts The 4th Asia Pacific Choir Games this month. Presented by the Colombo Cultural Hub Trust, under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and INTERKULTUR of Germany, it is the first time an INTERKULTUR choir event will be held in South Asia. Some of the categories that these professional and amateur choirs will compete in are: Gospel, Spiritual, Jazz, Pop, Folklore, Acappella to name a few. Choirs from all over the Asia Pacific region, regardless of their present level of achievement, will have the opportunity to participate in an Open Competition.

A Unique Inter-Cultural Fusion of Choral Splendour will be showcased at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre on Thursday the 26th of October at 7.00pm.

In addition to competitive participation, choirs will have the opportunity to perform in Friendship Concerts with other choirs in public venues within Colombo. These public concerts are FREE OF CHARGE and will provide opportunities for each choir to share the musical traditions of their native land with other choirs and with the Sri Lankan public. A Concert featuring Sacred Music will be conducted at St Mary's Church Bambalapitiya on Thursday the 26th of October at 10.00am. Entrance is free. All are welcome.

The 10th European Film Festival to be held next month

The 10th European film festival will be held  from the 13th to the 17th of next month at the Tharanganee Hall of the National Film Corporation. Master piece film collections from Germany, The Netherlands, the Check Republic, Britain, Slovakia, France, Italy, Poland, Switzerland and Romania will be featured at this exhibition.
