The ban on Viber has been lifted.

Access on messaging app 'Viber' has been allowed. The government says that the decision to remove the restriction imposed on Viber, was taken after considering the difficulties encountered by those employed overseas to communicate with their families in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, the government said it also took into consideration the hardships caused to the business community, tourists arriving in Sri Lanka and small scale entrepreneurs.

The government restricted access on social media due to the problematic situation in several areas of the country. At a meeting held in this regard, Minister of Digital Infrastructure Harin Fernando said, the temporary ban on other social media will be removed by Friday.

The government will discuss with representatives of social media networks in this regard, tomorrow. The Minister pointed out that a Media Development Policy needs to be empowered, in order to direct social media, on a path of 'social betterment'. He reiterated the government's stance to do all that is within its power to ensure national security and bring about reconciliation.
