The police headquarters say that the police narcotics bureau has detected a haul of Kerala Ganja worth over 20 million rupees in Wattala area yesterday.  The stock was packed in seven boxes and being transported in a van at the time arrest.

State Minister Mohan Lal Grero says that medical students have become pawns of disruptive political parties.

State Minister Mohan Lal Grero says that medical students have become pawns of disruptive political parties. He pointed out in Parliament today that the government has taken steps to resolve the SAITM issue and that demanding the closure of SAITM is only a one-sided solution.  He further stated that the government has taken many measures to resolve this issue. New medical faculties have also been implemented in state universities. The enrolment of students to the SAITM has been temporarily suspended.  Action has been taken to determine the minimum standards for private medical education in the country.

Minister Arjuna Ranatunga says that the laying of pipelines to transport aircraft fuel from Muthuraajawela to the Bandaranayake Internaitonal Airport, will commence within the next few months. He expressed these views at the monthly evaluation meeting of the ministry of petroleum resources development. Although it was planned to lay the pipe lines along the Hamilton Canal parallel to the Negombo road, due to obstructions faced a feasibility study was carried out to query into the possibility of laying the pipe lines along the Colombo-Katunayake highway.

Catalan Separatists in Spanish Custody

A Spanish judge has jailed two key members of the Catalan independence movement. Jordi Sánchez and Jordi Cuixart, who lead prominent separatist groups, are being held without bail while they are under investigation for sedition. The men were leading figures in the October 1st independence vote, which the Spanish Government regarded as illegal. Their detention led to protests overnight, with more expected across Catalonia today. They are being investigated over a protest on the 20th of September in which a crowd blocked Civil Guard officers inside a building in Catalonia's regional capital, Barcelona.

Leader of the opposition is to make a statement before the parliament regarding the rights of Tamil political prisoners.

Opposition leader R. Sambandan has produced a statement before the parliament stating  that it is an infringement of human rights if the court case against  20 inmates who are conducting a hunger strike, transferred to a court hearing cases in Sinhala.  A proposal demanding the immediate release of  Tamil political prisoners who are kept under custody under the prevention of terrorism act  is to be tabled before the parliament during the  adjournment debate today.   The leader of the opposition has informed the Speaker that the issue should be taken up considering as an emergency matter.

The number of Indian fishermen encroaching into Sri Lankan waters decreases as the new Navy commander appointed.  The deployment of Navy vessels in and around the sea borders between India and Sri Lanka has been increased minimizing Indian fishermen’ s encroachment into Sir Lankan waters.  New navy commander  Traviz Chinnaiah  has introduced the new mechanism in patrolling the coastal lines by Sri Lanka Navy.  Because of this measure, the number of apprehension of Indian fishermen has declined.   However, navy patrols along the boarder lines round the clock.
