A programme to develop the thousand Viharayas islandwide commenced today under the patronage of the Prime Minister.

Central Cultural Fund commenced a special programme to preserve and develop thousand Viharayas island-wide. Accordingly, it is expected to complete the renovation and development work of these Viharayas by next Vesak Poya Day. Necessary fund have been allocated for this purpose. Under the first phase 150 Viharayas will be developed with the support of 46 million rupees. The inaugural ceremony of this phase was held today at Temple Trees under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe.

Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa and Yoshita Rajapaksa have been summoned to the CID today.

Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa and Yoshita Rajapaksa have been summoned to the CID today. CID sources speaking to the media said they have been summoned with regard to a jeep owned by the Siriliya Saviya Foundation.The jeep was donated to the Foundation by the Red Cross. Summons had been previously sent to the two members of the Rajapaksa family on July 27-28 but both failed to show up citing various health reasons.

Parliamentarian Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thero made a formal request to ban all the use of this chemical from next year. The Thero also said many diseases will arise due to the excess use of this chemical. The Thero made these remarks at a media conference held in Colombo today. The Thero also said the chemicals of this nature are not essential for a country like Sri Lanka.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been briefed on a plan to fire missiles towards the US Pacific territory of Guam, state media says. But the report said he would watch US actions before making a decision on "the enveloping fire at Guam". Last week, the North said a plan was being drawn up to fire four missiles into the sea off Guam, where US bombers are based. It came amid a sharp rise in rhetoric between the US and North Korea. The report on state news agency KCNA said Kim Jong-un "examined the plan for a long time" and discussed it with senior military officials.

A special discussion to develop the Polonnaruwa new town was held under the patronage of the President.

A special discussion to develop the Polonnaruwa new town was held yesterday under the patronage of the President Maithripala Sirisena. The discussion was conducted at the Presidential Secretariat with the participation of all relevant stakeholders in charge of the projects. The project is being implemented under the Re-awakening Polonnaruwa District Development Programme.

A museum and information center will also be established in the town area. A sum of 600 million rupees has been allocated for this purpose.

Effective measures are taken to prepare the budget proposals for next year.

The Ministry of Finance and Mass Media has taken effective measures to collect information regarding the requirements from the line ministries to prepare the 2018 budget proposals. The main objective of this year's budget proposal is to increase the local production and reduce expenditure. Accordingly, the projects and other relevant proposals have been received by the Ministry officials. The Ministry officials have been educated on this subject.

The Ministry request the people centric budget proposals from all ministries, departments, provincial councils and local government organizations. Foreign investments and funds will also be utilized to implement some of the budget proposals. These proposals should be prepared with the aim of providing maximum benefits to the general public, the Ministry said.
